Welcome to the Fitness Simplified podcast. I’m Brooke Davis, Women’s Functional Nutritionist and Fitness Specialist with Elysian Women’s Wellness, and I’m here to simplify your fitness. Today, we’re going to talk about something that many people struggle with when starting a fitness journey: motivation.
Motivation is fleeting. Monday morning, it’s great. Sometimes by Monday afternoon, it’s gone.
So how can you get it and keep it? Let’s dive in. I’m sure you’ve heard of something along the lines of discipline over motivation, and there’s some truth to that, but discipline comes from somewhere deeper than just wanting a surface change. There are also scientific ways to make change easier than just trying to willpower your way through it and make it stick, but we’ll dive into that later.
Today, we’re going to talk about what I use as a step one for clients when working on permanent change. Finding your why, like your real why, not just so your clothes fit better because if that was the case, then you can just go buy new clothes, right? There’s something more foundational that has stirred the feelings of discomfort, driving you to have the desire for change and to reach out to ask for help. Part of the reason you haven’t just gone out and bought new clothes that fit better, right? I like this exercise because it can go deep and wide, but you have to be willing to be honest with yourself.
Why do you want this change? This exercise is called the five whys, but I don’t really think you should stop at five. So how does it work? You start with your surface physical goals. Okay, I’m going to be generic, but also very common here when I say, “I want to lose fat and tone up”, so build muscle, right? Then you ask, “why is this important to me?” The answer to that might be something along the lines of, “so I can feel more confident and comfortable in my body.”
Then you keep going, you keep asking that question: why is this important to me? “Because my family needs me to show up as my best self. And right now, I don’t want to go do things with my kids or even be intimate with my husband.” And this seems kind of silly, but voicing this… Why is that important to you? Well, again, another possible answer, “because I’m not leading by example for my kids and the life that I want them to lead and teaching them how to take care of themselves. In addition to that, when my relationship suffers, everything else is difficult and comes back around as a vicious cycle.”
Then asking again. And this seems almost self-explanatory. However, when you actually dig into what that is and you voice that and you verbalize it and you deconstruct it, it comes down to some very important values.
Okay, so we’re going to ask again, why is this important to you? “Because keeping promises to myself and honoring my body are values I want to share and instill in my kids. I want to teach them to eat nutritious foods and be able to maintain their lives with their kids. But right now, I’m not doing that. And I want a better relationship with my husband because happy, healthy relationships create quality of life. And right now, I don’t have this.”
You see where I’m going with this.
Okay, you could go on forever, around and around. There are so many aspects to it. You can start by listing multiple, maybe surface-wise, then branch off from there.
So what are you looking to do, right? What are you looking to change? And then why? So always starting with the what and then continuously digging into the why. If you do this right and you dig deep enough, it will take you to your core life values. It will take you to your deepest, truest core desires in their raw form.
These, these are the things that get you out of bed on a Friday morning at 5am to go to the gym, right? These are the things that have you buying vegetables over chips or making food at home instead of going out. Okay, this is not to say that you can’t do those things and still reach your goals. I’m all about balance and my clients do all of those things for sure.
But it gives you a purpose to make the different decisions that are going to change the trajectory of not just your life, but the people around you, right? Your family, your kids, your significant other. It helps make the “hard” decisions easy ones because they align with what you’ve recognized as your values. This can be the difference between successfully reaching your goals while making permanent change versus spinning your wheels only to end up back where you started.
If you would like to find your why, I have a worksheet that I will link in the show notes that you can use to dive into this yourself.
