How many supplements have you seen (or bought) claiming to “BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM”?
There’s a lot of talk about immune health lately for some reason…
So let’s talk about what we can do to help support our immune systems!
1. Sleep: Seriously stop scrolling and close your eyes. If you’re not getting at least 6 hrs/night your immune system will take a hit.
2. Stress: Mental and physical stress needs to be managed. Managing this through healthy outlets like breath work, moderate exercise, journaling, meditation and proper nutrition all help support the immune system.
3. Nutrition: I know, I know I’m beating a dead horse. Eat your vegetables, stop over consuming hyper palatable trans fat laden chips/ crackers / cookies and get more protein than my toddler please.
4. Exercise: I put this fourth, because the first three being accomplished are not only more important, but if they’re not being addressed then exercise can actually DECREASE your immune systems ability to fight off disease. While it is important, it is important to be done properly and balanced with the above 3 factors.
5. Supplements: You were waiting for this magic pill weren’t you? Well there aren’t any. There are a few supplements that have shown some promising benefits to immune health including Vitamin D (which most people are deficient in), Vitamin C and Zinc. Mushrooms such as chaga, reishi, turkey tail, shiitake, maitake, lion’s mane and cordyceps have also shown some of these benefits. HOWEVER – THESE ARE NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THE ABOVE (1-4). There is no ONE supplement that will be magical for you without the lifestyle that goes along with it. As always please talk to your doctor to make sure that these things are right for you. Lab testing to find hormone imbalances and nutrient deficiencies can also be a great way make sure you are addressing the root of immune function.
Soooo there ya go.
That’s it, those are the most simple and effective ways to “boost” your immune system…or rather support your body to let it do it’s thang.
Which one could you improve upon and how? Let me know in the comments!
