WE ATTACH actions and processes to thoughts and feelings through our behavior patterns.
The good news is that those can be re-programmed!
I had a client tell me she almost started crying during a workout the other day because she was frustrated and it was hardโฆbut she kept going.
I told her I have cried through tons of workouts at this point for various reasons.
Crying doesnโt mean you canโt physically keep going and the more you let your brain know that just because you cry doesnโt mean youโre going to stop – the easier that will be.
So cry. Be pissed, be frustrated, be sad – BUT DO IT ANYWAY.
Your mind gets in the way of a lot of things you want and even NEED.
But it can be retrained.
This is what discipline is.
Not listening to that voice in your head that says
โItโs been a stressful day – you deserve to watch TV instead of workoutโ
When in reality – YOU DESERVE TO FEEL YOUR BEST and thatโs not going to happen if you plop on the couch, watch TV and eat potato chips.
Self awareness is a tricky thing.
Being aware of your thought patterns & following patterns is the first step – having the discipline for LONG ENOUGH to make it a NEW PERMANENT HABIT is the next and hardest step.
So what can you do?
โ Write it down – when you find yourself repeating a behavior or pattern based on a thought process, literally make a note of it.
โ Write down what youโre going to do INSTEAD. Maybe to start itโs simply a phrase you repeat to yourself outlaid. โMY THOUGHTS DO NOT DETERMINE MY ACTIONS, AND I WILL DO WHAT I KNOW IS BEST FOR ME DESPITE THEM.โ
โ Pick a SPECIFIC action you will take immediately after that to further combat the thought.
Example: waking up early to workout
Thought: I didnโt sleep much last night, Iโll workout tomorrow. (Repeatedly)
Action: REPEAT ABOVE PHRASE THEN GTF OUT OF BED!
What habits do you struggle to solidify and what do you tell yourself?
